Ośrodek KARTA – archiwum historii Polski XX wieku

Ośrodek KARTA to niezależna organizacja zajmująca się dokumentowaniem i upowszechnianiem historii Polski oraz Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w XX wieku. Szczególne miejsce w jej działalności zajmuje gromadzenie osobistych świadectw historii – wspomnień, dzienników, dokumentów, fotografii i nagrań pozostawionych przez ludzi będących świadkami najważniejszych wydarzeń minionego stulecia.

Gromadzi ono nagrania relacji biograficznych dotyczących niemal całego XX wieku. Pierwsze nagrania powstały już w 1987 roku, kiedy rozpoczęto rejestrowanie wspomnień mieszkańców dawnych Kresów Wschodnich oraz obywateli polskich represjonowanych przez władze sowieckie.

Dla genealogii relacje historii mówionej mają szczególną wartość. Osoba opowiadająca o własnym życiu często wspomina rodziców, rodzeństwo, sąsiadów, znajomych, miejsca zamieszkania, szkoły, zakłady pracy oraz wydarzenia, których była świadkiem. Odnalezienie relacji członka rodziny lub osoby pochodzącej z tej samej miejscowości może więc dostarczyć informacji, których nie znajdziemy w tradycyjnej dokumentacji urzędowej.

Ośrodek posiada również ogromny zbiór fotografii, obejmujący ponad dwa tysiące kolekcji. Znajdują się w nim fotografie wykonane zarówno przez profesjonalnych fotografów, jak i osoby prywatne. Szczególnie istotna jest kolekcja zdjęć dotyczących represji podczas II wojny światowej oraz materiały dokumentujące działalność opozycji antykomunistycznej w okresie PRL.

Część materiałów fotograficznych pochodzi także z polskich instytucji działających poza granicami kraju oraz z wyjazdów dokumentacyjnych prowadzonych między innymi na Litwie, Białorusi, Ukrainie, w Wielkiej Brytanii i Argentynie. Może to być interesujące dla osób badających emigracyjne losy swoich rodzin.

Ośrodek KARTA udostępnia znaczną część informacji o swoich zbiorach przez Internet. Użytkownicy mogą korzystać między innymi z Otwartego Systemu Archiwizacji, Biblioteki Cyfrowej Ośrodka KARTA, Fotokarty, opisów relacji historii mówionej, Archiwum Wschodniego oraz Archiwum Opozycji. Sama Biblioteka Cyfrowa zawiera około 250 tysięcy stron dokumentów, natomiast Fotokarta prezentuje ponad 100 tysięcy fotografii ze zbiorów archiwum.

Z działalnością KARTY związany jest również projekt „Indeks Represjonowanych”. Przez wiele lat gromadzono w nim informacje dotyczące obywateli polskich represjonowanych przez władze sowieckie. Baza była wykorzystywana zarówno przez historyków i instytucje, jak i osoby prywatne poszukujące informacji o losach swoich krewnych.

Dla genealoga Ośrodek KARTA jest szczególnie wartościowy przy badaniu historii rodziny w XX wieku. Warto sprawdzić jego zasoby, jeżeli przodkowie mieszkali na Kresach, zostali deportowani do ZSRR, doświadczyli represji podczas II wojny światowej lub w okresie stalinowskim, działali w opozycji w czasach PRL albo pozostawili po sobie wspomnienia, fotografie i inne materiały dokumentujące ich życie.
